zinc finger protein 238; 58 kD repressor protein; transcriptional repressor RP58; translin-associated zinc finger protein 1; TAZ-1; zinc finger & BTB domain-containing protein 18; zinc finger protein C2H2-171 (ZNF238, RP58, TAZ1, ZBTB18)
Function:
- transcriptional repressor
- role in developmental processes such as myogenesis & brain development
- role in myogenesis by directly repressing expression of ID2 & ID3, 2 inhibitors of skeletal myogenesis
- also involved in controlling cell division of progenitor cells & regulating survival of postmitotic cortical neurons
- specifically binds the consensus DNA sequence 5'-[AC]ACATCTG[GT][AC]-3' which contains the E box core, & acts by recruiting chromatin remodeling multiprotein complexes
- may also play a role in the organization of chromosomes in the nucleus
- phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR
- interacts with DNMT3A
Structure:
- contains 1 BTB/POZ domain
- contains 4 C2H2-type Zn+2 fingers
Compartment:
- nucleus
- associates with condensed chromatin
Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2
Expression:
- expressed in lymphoid tissues, testis, heart, brain, skeletal muscle, pancreas >> other tissues
