zinc finger & BTB domain-containing protein 17; zinc finger protein 60; zinc finger protein 151; Myc-interacting zinc finger protein; Miz-1 (ZBTB17, MIZ1, ZNF151, ZNF60)
Function:
- may function as a housekeeping DNA-binding protein that regulates the expression of specific genes
- binds to the promoters of adenovirus major late protein & cyclin D1 & activates transcription
- has potent growth arrest activity, probably through inhibition of cell cycle progression
- required for early embryonic development during gastrulation
- binds to the C-terminal helix-loop-helix motif of c-myc which inhibits ZBTB17 transactivation & growth arrest activities & renders it insoluble in the nucleus
- c-myc is recruited to the p21WAF1/Cip1 promoter by ZBTB17; this blocks p21WAF1/Cip1 induction by p53 & other activators; c-myc does not affect p53 binding but inhibits bound p53 from activating transcription
- interacts with HCFC1, MAGEA4 & TMPRSS11A
Structure:
- belongs to the krueppel C2H2-type Zn+2-finger protein family
- contains 1 BTB/POZ domain
- contains 13 C2H2-type Zn+2 fingers
Compartment: nucleus
Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2
