zinc [Zn]
From the German zink meaning tin. Ores were used in medieval times in China & India. Pure zinc was first isolated in India in the 13th century, then in Europe by the German chemist Andreas Sigismund Marggraf in 1746.
Occurrence:
1) zinc occurs abundantly in minerals
2) comprises 0.007% of Earth's crust
Characteristics:
1) a blueish white crystalline metallic element of low to intermediate hardness
2) ductile when pure, but in the commercial form, it is brittle at ordinary temperatures & becomes ductile upon slight heating
3) tarnishes in air
Uses:
1) essential micronutrient for both plants & animals (second most common trace element)
2) galvanizing iron
- protective coating for iron & steel
3) alloys such as brass
4) dry cell batteries
5) see zinc oxide
6) zinc sulfide used as a phosphor in cathode ray tubes The major isotopes of zinc are Zn-64 & Zn-67. Zn-65 is a radioactive isotope that decays mainly by k-capture with a 1/2 life of 243.8 days. Zn-65 is used as a tracer in studies of zinc metabolism.
