Indications:
- plasma volume expansion to treat serious blood volume loss following surgery (FDA approved 12/07) {all age groups}
Contraindications: (relative)
- abnormal sensitivity to the synthetic starch used in the product
- fluid overload
- kidney failure not related to hypovolemia -dialysis
- severe hypernatremia, or hyperchloremia
- intracranial hemorrhage
Adverse effects:
- nausea
- itching
Mechanism of action:
- isotonic saline solution containing a synthetic starch (6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 in 0.9% sodium chloride)
