microsatellite or variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR)

Microsatellite or variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) are reiterated mono- & dinucleotide elements scattered throughout the genome [1]. They are stably inherited with a low rate of mutation. A PCR reaction using 2 primers that bracket a micro- satellite or VNTR produces a different pair of DNA bands from different individuals [2]. One of these bands contains the VNTR inherited from the individual's mother & the other contains the VNTR inherited from the father. A large set of DNA bands obtained from different PCR reactions, each of which amplifies DNA from a different VNTR, can serve as a 'fingerprint' in the identification of individuals.
