twisted gastrulation protein homolog 1 (TWSG1, TSG, PSEC0250)

Function: - role in dorsoventral axis formation - antagonizes BMP signaling by forming ternary complexes with CHRD & BMPs, thus preventing BMPs from binding to their receptors - also has pro-BMP activity, partly mediated by cleavage & degradation of CHRD, which releases BMPs from ternary complexes - modulates BMP-regulated cartilage development & chondrocyte differentiation - role in thymocyte development - interaction with CHRD & BMP4 enhances CHRD/BMP4 complex formation - interacts with BMP7 Structure: - belongs to the twisted gastrulation protein family - N-terminal domain is sufficient to interact with BMP4 Compartment: secreted Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - expressed in brain throughout development
