tropomyosin-beta; tropomyosin-2; beta-tropomyosin (TPM2, TMSB)

Function: - binds to actin filaments in muscle & non-muscle cells - role, in association with troponin complex, in Ca+2 dependent regulation of vertebrate striated muscle contraction - smooth muscle contraction is regulated by interaction with caldesmon - in non-muscle cells, implicated in stabilizing cytoskeleton actin filaments Structure: - heterodimer of an alpha & a beta chain - the molecule is in a coiled coil structure that is formed by 2 polypeptide chains - prominent 7-residue periodicity - belongs to the tropomyosin family Compartment: cytoplasm, cytoskeleton Alternative splicing: named isoforms=3 Expression: - skeletal muscle - absent from normal breast tissue Pathology: - present in primary breast cancer tissue; absent from normal breast tissue - defects in TPM2 are the cause of a) nemaline myopathy type 4 b) arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, distal, type 1
