tropical calcific pancreatitis
idiopathic, juvenile, nonalcoholic form of chronic pancreatitis
Etiology:
- can be associated with fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes depending on both environmental & genetic factors
Epidemiology:
- widely prevalent in several tropical countries
Genetics:
- associated with defects in SPINK1
Differential diagnosis:
- differs from alcoholic pancreatitis by
- a much younger age of onset
- pancreatic calcification
- high incidence of insulin dependent but ketosis resistant diabetes mellitus
- an exceptionally high incidence of pancreatic cancer
Complications:
- exceptionally high incidence of pancreatic cancer
