Trientine hydrochloride. N,N'-bis (2-aminoethyl-1,2-ethane-diamine dihydrochloride [NH2-(CH2)2-NH-(CH2)2-NH-(CH2)2-NH2] * 2HCl C6H18N4 * 2HCl
Indications:
1) hepatolenticular degeneration (Wilson's disease)
2) not recommended for rheumatoid arthritis or cystinuria
Dosage:
1) start: 750-1250 mg QD divided TID or QID; max: 2 g/day
2) start: 500-750 mg PO QD in children; max 1.5 g/day
3) take on empty stomach
- 1 hour before meals, or 2 hours after meals
4) average effective daily dose: 1-2 g
Capsules: 250 mg
Adverse effects:
1) iron deficiency
2) recurrence of prior symptoms of lupus erythematosus
3) pregnancy category C: teratogenic in rats
Mechanism of action: copper chelation
