transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8 (TrpM8, transient receptor potential-p8, Trp-p8, long transient receptor potential channel 6, LTrpC6, TRPP8)
Function:
1) receptor-activated non-selective cation channel
2) detection of sensations such as coolness
- activated by cold temperature below 25 degrees Celsius
3) activated by icilin, eucalyptol, menthol, cold, modulation of intracellular pH
4) involved in menthol sensation
5) sensation of coolness triggered by eucalyptol or menthol results from menthol & cool temperatures sensations detected by same protein
6) permeable for Na+, K+, Cs+ & Ca+2
7) temperature sensing is tightly linked to voltage-dependent gating
8) activated upon depolarization
- changes in temperature result in graded shifts of voltage-dependent activation
9) agonist menthol functions as gating modifier
- shifts activation curves towards physiological membrane potentials
Compartment: membrane
Alternative splicing: named isoforms=3
Expression:
- expressed in prostate & most prostate tumors
Pathology:
- expressed in other tumors: (other than prostate tumors)
- colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer
Pharmacology: may be suitable antigen for vaccination against prostate cancer
