Etiology: 1) severe infection 2) other toxic conditions Pathology: - dark blue-purple (basophilic) cytoplasmic granules in metamyelocytes, bands or neutrophils - normally granules loose their basophilia in the mature neutrophil - the toxic granules stain peroxidase positive* * There may be less peroxidase activity in toxic neutrophils than in normal ones
