total red cell volume

Indications: - evaluation of polycythemia Procredure: - Cr-51 labeled erythrocytes are used to measure red cell mass - I-125 labed albumin is used to measure plasma volume; hematocrit is measured with a Coulter counter; total red cell volume is calculated (approximation) - hct = red cell volume/ (plasma volume + red cell volume) - hct x (plasma volume + red cell volume) = red cell volume - red cell volume x (1 - hct) = hct x plasma volume - red cell volume = (hct x plasma volume) / (1 - hct)
