thyroid suppression test

Indications: - none, obsolete test replaced by 3rd generation serum TSH & the TRH stimulation test Principle: - relies on the change in serum thyroxine as measure of the thyroid response to administration of T3 Procedure: - 100 ug of T3 is given daily in 2 divided doses over a period of 7-10 days - 24 hour radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) is obtained before & during the last 2 days of T3 administration - normal response is a suppression of the RAIU by at least 50% compared to the pre-T3 treatment value - no change or lesser reduction is not only typical of thyrotoxicosis, including Graves disease
