Laboratory: - serum TSH is the most sensitive indicator of thyroid function in ambulatory patients with intact pituitary function [2] - in sick elderly patients, both serum TSH & free T4 should be used to evaluate thyroid function [4] - see ARUP consult [1] Special Laboratory: - thyroid ultrasound - indications - screening - history of radiation exposure to head & neck - MEN2 - family history of thyroid carcinoma - routine screening not recommended [5] - diagnostic - unexplained cervical lymphadenopathy - evaluation of thyroid nodule - guidance for FNA of thyroid nodule(s)
