Epidemiology: 1) 2,000,000 deaths/year due to thrombotic events 2) most common cause of death in US, includes a) deep venous thrombosis (DVT) b) pulmonary embolus (PE) c) myocardial infarction (MI) d) embolic stroke 3) more than 1/2 have acquired or inherited coagulation defect Pathology: - arterial thrombosis & venous thrombosis manifestations of underlying hypercoagulability [4]
