thromboplastin; tissue factor; TF; coagulation factor III; CD142 (F3)

Function: - membrane protein linked to either phosphatidyl ethanolamine or phosphatidylcholine - binds factor VII or factor VIIa markedly increasing proteolytic activity of factor VIIa towards its primary substrate, factor X & factor IX - initiates cell-surface assembly & propagation of the extrinsic coagulation cascade Structure: belongs to the tissue factor family Compartment: membrane Expression: - expression is highly dependent upon cell type - induced by inflammatory mediators interleukin 1 & TNF, as well as by endotoxin - appears on surface of monocytes & vascular endothelial cells as a component of cellular immune response
