Thompson test; midcalf squeeze test

No plantar flexion noted on squeezing calf with rupture of Achilles tendon. Indications: - test for Achilles tendon rupture Procedure: - with the patient in the prone position, examine the posterior aspect of both heels - asymmetry may show a less demarcated Achilles tendon border - squeeze the belly of the gastrocnemius (thickest part of calf) on the unaffected side; this should result in plantar flexion of the foot - squeeze the belly of the gastrocnemius on the affected side; no plantar flexion of the foot is a positive test [2] Notes: - pain just above the ankle with a midcalf squeeze test suggests tibiofibular syndesmosis ligament injury
