Thompson test; midcalf squeeze test
No plantar flexion noted on squeezing calf with rupture of Achilles tendon.
Indications:
- test for Achilles tendon rupture
Procedure:
- with the patient in the prone position, examine the posterior aspect of both heels
- asymmetry may show a less demarcated Achilles tendon border
- squeeze the belly of the gastrocnemius (thickest part of calf) on the unaffected side; this should result in plantar flexion of the foot
- squeeze the belly of the gastrocnemius on the affected side; no plantar flexion of the foot is a positive test [2]
Notes:
- pain just above the ankle with a midcalf squeeze test suggests tibiofibular syndesmosis ligament injury
