telomere analysis
Indications:
- evaluation of dyskeratosis congenita [2]
Clinical significance:
- telomere length may be predictive of serum cholesterol & pulmonary function [2]*
- telomere length does not add to the predictive power of chronological age in predicting functional decline [3]*
- telomere length does not predict cognitive decline [3]*
- leukocyte telomere length is associated with a small risk of increased overall mortality (RR=1.1) & a higher risk of mortality was associated with organ-specific disease (digestive RR=1.3, respiratory RR=1.4, musculoskeletal RR=1.5) [4]
- longer leukocyte telomere length is associated alterations in cardiovascular structure & function [7]
- higher left ventricular mass
- larger ventricular sizes
- larger atrial sizes
- higher stroke volumes.
- longer leukocyte telomere length may be associated with a reduce risk of heart failure (only after accounting for potential confounders) [7]
* specimen: saliva
Specimen:
- peripheral-blood leukocytes
- saliva [3]
Increases:
- green tea may be protective against leukocyte telomere shortening whereas coffee & soft drinks may not [5]
Decreases:
- leukocyte telomere length decreases with biological aging [6]
