synaptonemal complex central element protein 2 (central element synaptonemal complex protein 1, SYCE2 CESC1)

Function: - major component of the transverse central element of synaptonemal complexes - requires SYCP1 for incorporation into the central element - role in synaptonemal complexe assembly, stabilization & recombination (putative) - found in a complex with SYCP1 & SYCE1 - interacts with SYCP1 & SYCE1 (putative) Structure: - homodimer - belongs to the SYCE family Compartment: - nucleus, associates with chromatin - in prophase 1 stage of meiosis, localizes in the transverse central elements of the central region between lateral elements of the synaptonemal complexes - found only where the chromosome cores are synapsed - colocalizes with SYCE1 in the central elements
