superior hypogastric plexus (Latarget's nerve)

The continuation of the aortic plexus inferior to the aortic bifurcation across the 5th lumbar vertebra into the pelvis. In the pelvis, it divides into 2 hypogastric nerves at the sides of the rectum. The 2 hypogastric nerves join the pelvic splanchnic nerves to form the inferior hypogastric plexuses (on either side) supplying the pelvic viscera.
