Sulfiredoxin-1 (EC 1.8.98.2) (SRXN1 C20orf139 SRX)

Function: - contributes to oxidative stress resistance by reducing cysteine-sulfinic acid formed under exposure to oxidants in the peroxiredoxins PRDX1, PRDX2, PRDX3 & PRDX4 - does not act on PRDX5 or PRDX6 - may catalyze reduction in a multi-step process by acting both as a specific phosphotransferase & a thioltransferase peroxiredoxin-(S-hydroxy-S-oxocysteine) + ATP + 2 R-SH peroxiredoxin-(S-hydroxycysteine) + ADP + phosphate + R-S-S-R Cofactor: M+2 Structure: belongs to the sulfiredoxin family Compartment: cytoplasm Expression: - widely expressed - highest levels in kidney, lung, spleen & thymus
