From Strontian, the town in Scotland where it was discovered. Discovered by Irish scientist Adair Crawford in 1790. Occurrence: 1) obtained from ores celestite & strontianite 2) occurs only in combined form 3) several radioactive isotopes, including Sr-90 Characteristics: 1) silvery-yellow, soft malleable ductile metallic element 2) forms divalent cation Sr+2 a) metabolized in the body much like Ca+2 b) Sr+2 can replace Ca+2 in bone tissue (see Sr-90 & strontium ranelate) Uses: 1) color TV tubes 2) crimson fireworks 3) production of some ferrites 4) radiopharmaceutical (strontium-89)
