- catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine 1-phosphate, a lipid mediator with both intra- & extracellular functions
- also acts on D-erythro-dihydrosphingosine, D-erythro-sphingosine & L-threo-dihydrosphingosine
