somatopause
Decline in growth hormone & somatomedin C (IGF-1) with age.
Pathology:
1) diminished pulse amplitude of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) secretion from the hypothalamus
2) decreased response of pituitary somatotrophs to GHRH & to ghrelin
3) decreased pulse amplitude of growth hormone secretion from pituitary; reversed circadian cycle
4) no change in somatostatin
5) higher free fatty acid levels suppress growth hormone output
