SNARE [soluble NSF attachment receptor] protein (SNARE, SNAP receptor)
Function:
1) mediate fusion of cellular transport vesicles with a target compartment
a) lysosome
b) docking of synaptic vesicles with presynaptic membrane
2) metastable 'trans' complexes are formed from 3 SNAREs:
a) syntaxin 1 (plasma membrane)
b) SNAP-25 (plasma membrane)
c) synaptobrevin (vesicular)
Compartment:
- plasma membrane, vesicles
- vesicular, v-SNAREs, found in transport vesicles during budding
- target, t-SNAREs, found membranes of target compartments
Pathology:
- SNAREs are targets of the bacterial neurotoxins responsible for botulism & tetanus
Comparative biology:
- a large protein superfamily, > 60 members in yeast & mammals
