beta-galactoside alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 2; CMP-N-acetylneuraminate-beta-galactosamide-alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase 2; alpha 2,6-ST 2; monosialoganglioside sialyltransferase; ST6gal II; ST6gal-II; ST6galII; hST6gal II (ST6GAL2, KIAA1877, SIAT2)

Function: - transfers sialic acid from the donor of substrate CMP-sialic acid to galactose containing acceptor substrates - alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase activity toward oligosaccharides that have the gal-beta-1,4-GlcNAc sequence at the non-reducing end of their carbohydrate groups - weak or no activities toward glycoproteins & glycolipids CMP-N-acetylneuraminate + beta-D-galactosyl-1,4-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosamine CMP + alpha-N-acetylneuraminyl-2,6-beta-D-galactosyl-1,4- N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosamine Kinetic parameters: - KM=0.74 mM for gal-beta-1,4-GlcNAc-beta-O-octyl - KM=0.71 mM for gal-beta-1,4-GlcNAc - KM=0.48 mM for lacto-N-neotetraose Structure: belongs to the glycosyltransferase 29 family Compartment: Golgi membrane Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - weakly expressed in some tissues, including small intestine, colon & fetal brain - induced by IL6 & IL8
