Extended cycle oral contraceptive. (91 day menstrual cycle) Contains ethinyl estradiol 30 ug + levonorgestrel 150 ug
Indications:
-> contraception
Dosage:
1) 1 tab QD for 84 days
2) placebo for 7 days or skip 7 days
3) restart cycle
Adverse effects:
1) may be more spotting between menstrual periods
2) migraines during placebo days
Mechanism of action:
1) allows women to cycle every 91 days (seasonally)
2) contraceptive suppresses endometrial thickening, thus monthly bleeding unnecessary to slough endometrium
