SAFE study

Design: 1) double blind trial 2) 7000 surgical or medical intensive care unit patients 3) 64% with mechanical ventilation 4) 44% with organ failure (1 or more organs) Fluid resuscitation with normal saline or 4% albumin Results: 1) all cause mortality same in both groups at 21 days 2) a trend toward improved outcome with 4% albumin observed in septic patients 3) a trend toward improved outcome with normal saline observed in head trauma patients
