respiratory burst; oxidative burst

A burst of oxygen metabolism in phagocytes, especially neutrophils catalyzed by NADPH oxidase. This burst generates active oxygen species essential for the bactericidal activity of the phagocyte. Defects occur in chronic granulomatous disease.
