renal vascular disease
Etiology:
1) renal artery stenosis
- fibromuscular dysplasia
- atherosclerosis often associated with cigarette smoking
2) renal vein thrombosis
Epidemiology:
- women (fibromuscular dysplasia)
Clinical manifestations:
- onset at an early age
- acute pulmonary edema
- bruits in flank region
- advanced retinopathy
Laboratory:
- serum creatinine increased (bilateral renal artery stenosis)
- further increased after treatment with ACE inhibitor or ARB
Complications:
1) renovascular hypertension
2) acute renal failure
