Etiology: - thromboembolism from a cardiac source (> 50%) - atrial fibrillation Pathology: - infarction of one or both kidneys Clinical manifestations: - acute flank pain or generalized abdominal pain - nausea/vomiting - fever less common - hematuria (1/3) Radiology: - contrast-enhanced abdominal CT - wedge-shaped prefusion defect
