perception that sounds become rapidly louder with increasing sound level Etiology: - cochlear disorder - Meniere's disease Pathology: - damage to outer hair cells alters characteristics of the basilar membrane, resulting in aberrant auditory nerve responses that may be associated with recruitment of loudness Clinical manifestations: - common for people with cochlear disorders to request other people to 'speak louder' followed by a complaint of 'stop shouting' Differential diagnosis: - hyperacusis
