Rappaport Luebering pathway

Pathway from 1,3-diphosphoglycerate (1,3-DPG) to 3-phospho- glycerate (3-PG) through 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), presumably to generate 2,3-DPG for regulation of hemoglobin oxygen affinity in erythrocytes. The pathway, a detour off the pathway of glycolysis, comes at a cost, sacrificing production of ATP in the conversion of 1,3-DPG to 3-PG. 2,3-DPG mutase 2,3-DPG phosphatase 1,3-DPG --------------> 2,3-DPG -------------------> 3-PG
