GTP-binding nuclear protein Ran; GTPase Ran; Ras-related nuclear protein; Ras-like protein TC4; androgen receptor-associated protein 24; spi1 protein (RAN, ARA24, OK/SW-cl81)

Function: - nucleocytoplasmic transport a) import of proteins into nucleus b) export of RNA from nucleus - chromatin condensation - cell cycle control - enhances androgen receptor (AR) mediated transactivation; a) interacts with AR N-terminal poly-Gln region b) interaction with AR is inversely correlated with the poly-Gln length - forms a complex with CHC1 - part of a complex consisting of RANBP9, Ran, DYRK1B & COPS5 - found in a nuclear export complex with RANBP3 & XPO1 - component of a nuclear export receptor complex composed of KPNB1, Ran, SNUPN & XPO1 - found in a trimeric export complex with SNUPN, Ran & XPO1 - interacts with RANBP10 Structure: - monomer - N-terminus is blocked - belongs to the small GTPase superfamily, Ran family Compartment: - nucleus, cytoplasm. melanosome - becomes dispersed throughout the cytoplasm during mitosis - in melanosome fractions from stage 1 to stage 4 Expression: expressed in a variety of tissues Pathology: - in HIV-1 infection, found in a complex with HIV-1 Rev, RNAs containing a Rev response element (RRE) & XPO1 - found in a complex with HTLV-1 Rex, RANBP3 & XPO1
