pyramidal cell (neuron)
Multipolar projection neuron of the hippocampus or cerebral cortex
Morphology:
1) triangular shaped perikarya
- generally 10-50 um in size, but may be as large as 100 um
2) single apical dendrite extending towards the pial surface
3) multiple basilar dendrites
4) single axon
Characteristics:
1) 75-80% of neurons in mammalian neocortex
2) all use excitatory transmitter glutamate or aspartate
3) receive projections from within & from outside the cerebral cortex
4) only neurons that send projections out of the cortex
