Multipolar projection neuron of the hippocampus or cerebral cortex Morphology: 1) triangular shaped perikarya - generally 10-50 um in size, but may be as large as 100 um 2) single apical dendrite extending towards the pial surface 3) multiple basilar dendrites 4) single axon Characteristics: 1) 75-80% of neurons in mammalian neocortex 2) all use excitatory transmitter glutamate or aspartate 3) receive projections from within & from outside the cerebral cortex 4) only neurons that send projections out of the cortex
