Function: - interacts with PI16 - specific receptors for MSMB are found on spermatozoa & in the prostate Structure: - homodimer - belongs to the beta-microseminoprotein family Compartment: secreted, sperm surface Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2; PSP94, PSP57 Expression: - strongly expressed in prostate, liver, kidney, breast & penis - also expressed in pancreas, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, colon, trachea, lung, salivary glands & fallopian tube - PSP94 is expressed in lung & breast - PSP57 is found in kidney & bladder Pathology: - defects in MSMB are the cause of susceptibility to prostate cancer hereditary type 13 Note: - originally thought to inhibit the secretion of FSH by pituitary cells
