prostaglandin E2 receptor EP3 subtype; PGE receptor, EP3 subtype; PGE2-R; prostanoid EP3 receptor (PTGER3)
Function:
- receptor for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)
- may be involved in
a) inhibition of gastric acid secretion
b) modulation of neurotransmitter release in central & peripheral neurons
c) inhibition of Na+ & water reabsorption in renal tubules
d) contraction in uterine smooth muscle
- activity can couple to both the inhibition of a denylate cyclase mediated by Gi proteins, & to an elevation of intracellular Ca+2
- various isoforms have identical ligand binding properties but can interact with different second messenger systems (putative)
Structure: belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 1 family
Compartment: cell membrane
Alternative splicing: named isoforms=7 Additional isoforms seem to exist
- EP3A (EP3-I, EP3a1, EP3a2, EP(3-Ic))
- EP3C (EP3-II, EP3D)
- EP3B (EP3-III, EP3E)
- EP3D (EP3-IV, EP3F)
- EP3E
- EP3F
- EP3G
Expression:
- expressed in small intestine, heart, pancreas, gastric fundic mucosa, mammary artery & pulmonary vessels
