prohibitin (PHB)

Function: - inhibits DNA synthesis - role in regulating proliferation - unclear if the protein or mRNA exhibits this effect - role in regulating mitochondrial respiration activity - role in terminal cellular differentiation - interacts with PHB2 Structure: belongs to the prohibitin family Compartment: mitochondrial inner membrane Expression: - widely expressed in different tissues - levels of expression in fibroblasts decrease heterogeneously during cellular terminal differentiation - expression increases approximately 3-fold upon entry into G1 phase compared with other phases of the cell cycle - induced following inhibition of mitochondrial protein synthesis by thiamphenicol Pathology: mutated in sporadic breast cancer
