presbyopia
The physiologic loss of accomodation in the eyes with advancing age. It begins when the near point has receded beyond 22 cm (9 inches).
Pathology:
- loss of deformability of the lens?
Clinical manifestations:
1) difficulty focusing on near objects
2) onset is insidious
3) generally begins in midlife (50's)
4) disorder is progressive
5) patients often require a change in corrective lenses every 2-3 years
Management:
- corrective lenses
- pilocarpine ophthalmic 1,3% (Vuity) FDA-approved
