predictors of noncardiac surgery mortality
Procedure:
1) American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification
- normal or healthy = 0
- mild systemic disease = 2
- severe systemic disease = 4
- severe systemic disease with constant threat to life = 5
- moribund patient; not expected to survive without surgery = 6
2) surgery-specific risk
- mastectomy, joint replacement, appendectomy, hysterectomy or other low-risk surgery = 0
- infra-inguinal vascular surgery, Nissen fludoplasty or other intermediate-risk surgery = 1
- abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, liver resection, pancreatic resection or other high-risk surgery = 2
3) urgency of surgery
- elective or non-emergent = 0
- emergency surgery = 1
