predictors of noncardiac surgery mortality

Procedure: 1) American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification - normal or healthy = 0 - mild systemic disease = 2 - severe systemic disease = 4 - severe systemic disease with constant threat to life = 5 - moribund patient; not expected to survive without surgery = 6 2) surgery-specific risk - mastectomy, joint replacement, appendectomy, hysterectomy or other low-risk surgery = 0 - infra-inguinal vascular surgery, Nissen fludoplasty or other intermediate-risk surgery = 1 - abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, liver resection, pancreatic resection or other high-risk surgery = 2 3) urgency of surgery - elective or non-emergent = 0 - emergency surgery = 1 Interpretation: - 9 points total - 30 day mortality - 0-2 points: <0.1% - 3 points: 0.2% - 4 points: 0.5% - 5 points: 1.5% - 6 points: 4.0% - 7 points: 10.0% - 8 points: 25.0% - 9 points: 50.0%
