Function:
1) form multiprotein complexes (see Polycomb group multiprotein PRC1 complex)
2) transcriptional repression of genes via modification of chromatin, rendering it heritably changed in expressibility
3) maintain transcriptionally repressive state of homeotic genes throughout development
4) NOT required to initiate repression, but to maintain it during later stages of development
5) methylation of histones, rendering chromatin heritably changed in its expressibility (putative)
