pleuroperitoneal hiatus (Bochdalek foramen)

An opening through the diaphragm connecting pleural & peritoneal cavities, usually the result of defective development of the pleuroperitoneal membrane in the embryo. Pathology: - defect, if extensive - there may be herniation of digestive organs into the pleural cavity.
