Function: - role in placental development Structure: - belongs to the PLAC1 family Compartment: secreted Expression: - expressed in placenta. - localizes primarily to differentiated syncytiotrophoblast throughout gestation as well as to a small population of villous cytotrophoblasts - also detected in maternal blood & rapidly disappears following delivery, - not detected in other adult or fetal tissues - up-regulated during trophoblast differentiation & by fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF-7) in trophoblast cells
