parathyroid hyperplasia

Etiology: - sporadic - MEN1 or MEN2A Pathology: - usually all 4 glands enlarged, but may be asymetrical with inferior glands larger - total weight usually 1-3 grams Microscopic pathology: - usually chief cell hyperplasia, may have oxyphil cell hyperplasia - loss of adipose tissue - usually no rim of compressed normal tissue - may be nodular - may have mitotic activity Differential diagnosis: - parathyroid adenoma
