Pathology: - birth defect - extreme of umbilical herniation - infant's intestine or other abdominal organs protrude through the umbilicus onto the abdominal wall - 25-40% of infants with an omphalocele have other birth defects Special laboratory: - prenatal ultrasound may identify affected infants Complications: - intestinal infection - intestinal infarction Management: - surgery - surgical correction may be delayed as the abdominal contents are protected by the enveloping omentum
