Etiology: Herpes simplex Epidemiology: 1) most common infectious cause of corneal blindness in US 2) recurrence: a) 1 year 20%, 2 years 23%, 20 years 63% b) fever, stress, sunlight or eye injury may precipitate recurrence Pathology: 1) painful lesion on eyelid or surface of eye 2) corneal inflammation Complications: - stromal keratitis Management: - vidarabine ophthalmic or cidofovir ophthalmic [1] - ophthalmic glucocorticoids contraindicated [1] - see Herpes simplex
