Etiology:
1) pathological condition in certain patients with alkaptonuria
2) hydroquinone [2]
Pathology:
-> cartilage degeneration results osteoarthritis & chondrocalcinosis, particularly of the spine
Clinical manifestations:
1) pigmentation of cartilage
2) pigmentation of other tissues may occur
a) muscle
b) epithelial cells
c) dense connective tissue
3) pigmentation of:
a) sclera
b) mucous membrane of the lips
c) skin of the ears, face & hands
Laboratory:
- standing urine is dark in color & contains pigmented* casts
* pigmentation occurs secondary to oxidation of homogentisic acid
