nuclear factor of activated T-cells 5; NF-AT5; T-cell transcription factor NFAT5; Tonicity-responsive enhancer-binding protein; TonE-binding protein; TonEBP (NFAT5, KIAA0827, TONEBP)
Function:
- role in the inducible expression of genes
- regulates hypertonicity-induced cellular accumulation of osmolytes
- does not bind with Fos & Jun transcription factors
- might be capable of forming stable dimers with DNA elements
- stimulates macrophage secretion of the angiogenesis molecule VEGF-C [2]
Structure: contains 1 RHD (Rel-like) domain
Compartment: nucleus
Alternative splicing: named isoforms=3; A, B, C
Expression:
- highest levels in skeletal muscle, brain, heart & peripheral blood leukocytes
- also expressed in placenta, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, thymus, prostate, testis, ovary, small intestine & colon
- induced in macrophages in response to hypertonic conditions [2]
Pathology:
- defects in macrophage NFAT5-stimulated VEGF-C secretion may play a role in salt-sensitive hypertension
