Indications: phosphate replacement therapy
Contraindications:
pregnancy-category C
safety in lactation ?
Dosage:
1) 1 packet reconstituted with 75 mL of water 4 times/day
2) 1-2 tabs PO TID/QID
1 tab = 1 packet: 250 mg of phosphorous
Contains equimolar amounts of Na+ & K+ phosphates
Pharmacokinetics: elimination in urine
Adverse effects:
1) mild laxative effect
2) headache
3) dizziness
4) confusion
Drug interactions:
1) antacids: products containing aluminum, magnesium or calcium may bind phosphate & prevent absorption
2) calcium/vitamin D: the effects of phosphate may be antagonized in the treatment of hypocalcemia
3) K+ containing products: increased risk of hyperkalemia
4) K+ sparing diuretics: increased risk of hyperkalemia
