neurotrophin-3; NT-3; HDNF; nerve growth factor 2; NGF-2; neurotrophic factor 3 (NTF3)

Function: - neurotrophic for sensory neurons of nodose ganglion - binds to gp145trkC, gp145trkB, gp140trk - seems to promotes the survival of visceral & proprioceptive sensory neurons - role in neuroplasticity, learning & memory [3] Structure: belongs to the NGF-beta family Compartment: secreted Expression: - brain & peripheral tissues - upregulated by fasting via switch from brain utilization of glucose to lactate [3] - high-intensity exercise induces an increase in serum BDNF [3] Polymorphism: - variant Glu-76 (frequently reported as Glu-63) was thought to be associated with severe forms of schizophrenia - this seems not to be the case
